CELEBRATION OF DÍA DE MUERTOS

Join us for our annual celebration of Day of the Dead on Nov 3 at 7:00.  Readers this year will be Maria De Los Angelas Diaz and Sofiana Olivera Abalan.  Xanath Caraza and World’s Window will provide altars, Allen Arias’ band, Hide in the Shadows will provide music, and the Calpulli Iskal Dancers will perform traditional Mexica dance.  A reception of native foods will be provided.

Hide in the Shallows is a fusion of indie folk and acoustic rock style. Their bilingual lyrics foster their identities as they perform from their experiences. Allen Arias (guitar and composer) is from Costa Rica, and Stephen Barber (bass) and Hank Winterscheidt (percussion) are from America.

Maria De Los Ángeles Diaz was born in México, but was raised in Honduras where her family resides. She is currently a Kansas City resident. Maria has a degree in Architecture from the University of Mexico (UNAM) where she earned a prize from the Royal Institute of British Architects for her help on a project that designed a solar house for the community of Chempil, Chiapas community. Maria enjoys literature and attends poetry workshops in Honduras and Kansas. She is a member of The Latino writer collective of Kansas, and her poetry has been published in the new anthology of the Latino Writers Collective in KC.  Corazon y una Lengua Peregrina and the new world anthology in honor of Berta Caceres Despierta Humanidad, some of her poetry has been published several digital magazines. Maria works as an interpreter and tutors students in different subjects.

Sofiana Olivera Abalan

Sofiana Olivera Abalan is a writer, traveler and an immigrant to the USA.  She writes fiction and theater both inSpanish andEnglish.  Her stories have appeared in Stories from the Heartland and in Corazón y una lengua peregrina.  Her short theater piece,  The Chargemaster, was selected byBarn Player6x10Festival.
